The Roots Of Anti-Trans Violence
The history of the Stonewall uprising, the ballroom scene, and the extravagant Self-acceptance parades are just a few historical examples of why New York Metropolis has become an LGBTQ touchstone. But each year, New York state ranks among the highest in the country when it comes to fatal transphobic violence. Between 2017 and 2020, at least nine trans individuals were reported violently killed in Fresh York state, making it one of top five states that are most hostile to trans people. It’s possible that more fatal transphobic violence went unreported.
The numbers contradict existing stereotypes wherein the South is discarded as hotbeds of conservatism. One could argue that the way New York has branded itself as progressive allows it to conceal the violence that is inflicted on marginalized communities love trans people.

To obtain a legal name change in Fresh York, an applicant must submit a petition to the court. There is no publication requirement. Entitle change cases that contain been granted are common record by default and may be searchable online. All name changes are temporarily sealed while the matter is pending, and the petition may seek that the record be permanently sealed. The Metropolis Council on Thursday approved a broad legislative package aimed at strengthening civil rights protections and healthcare access for transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and intersex (TGNCNBI) individuals, marking one of the most comprehensive local efforts in the nation to safeguard gender-diverse communities.
The slate of bills comes in response to several federal rollbacks by President Donald Trump’s administration. It also bolsters capital infrastructure and support systems for TGNCNBI New Yorkers and visitors.
Some of the actions taken by the Trump administration so far threatening transgender rights own included attempts to axe gender-affirming medical care, removing references to transgender people from federal websites and databases, banning transgender people from serving in the military, and terminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Queens Council Member Tiffany Cabán, sponsor of one of the key measures, Introduction 1200-A, said the legislation “ensures people’s gender identities are seen, are affirmed, and marked in our city records.”
