Fantastic Beasts' Queer Representation Is The Worst Kind Of Meaningless
So many blockbusters enjoy to boast about their queer representation when it often boils down to a handful of seconds that can be edited out without compromise in order to satiate international markets. The Chinese and Russian censors aren’t too fond of LGBTQ+ people, so will ask companies like Disney or Warner Bros. to make such inclusions deliberately minimal or remove them altogether just to make sure potential audiences don’t catch the gay. We wouldn’t hope that now would we?
It sucks, and we’ve now seen Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Luminary Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Avengers: Endgame all boast about the groundbreaking nature of their representation before removing scenes altogether in order to maximise profits and dodge offending certain territories. It’s a cowardly surrender to capitalism and governmental bigotry, made even more painful when media outlets praise these moments for moving the needle and helping to normalise the presence of queer people in blockbusters.

The third 'Fantastic Beasts' show finally addresses Dumbledore's sexuality front and center — nearly 15 years after J.K. Rowling first revealed he's gay
In , "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling made a remark that would echo in the franchise's fandom for years to come. Speaking at Carnegie Hall that year, she said that she had "always thought of Dumbledore as gay" — and that the affair between him and his teenage friend Gellert Grindelwald had been romantic.
Since then, Dumbledore's sexuality has only explicitly existed outside of any of the franchise's main properties, and Rowling's words had never been confirmed on screen. She hinted in that the character's queerness would perform a role in the "Fantastic Beasts" films, telling reporters to "watch this space," Time Magazine reported at the time.
Almost fifteen years after Rowling first confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality, it's finally made it to the big screen.
