Salt Lake City (March 2022) – The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) announced it will host its annual LGBTQ+ softball tournament in Salt Lake Capital May 26-28, 2023, at the Valley Regional Complex. 

The top elite A and B division teams from NAGAAA organizations all over the United States and Canada will compete to determine the NAGAAA Cup Champions. The tournament also allows teams to qualify for the Gay Softball Planet Series. The games are expose to the public and the entire community will be invited to cheer on the teams and join in a large party to bring the entire community together in support and unity. 

Salt Lake was chosen by NAGAAA over other locations, not only for its organic beauty but because of the warm welcome extended by the entire society. Salt Lake has an active and robust population that is excited to be involved in the event and organizers were impressed with how beautifully everyone here comes together.

Apilado. v. North American Same-sex attracted Amateur Athletic Association

LaRon Charles, Jon Russ and Steven Apilado had been playing softball together in the San Francisco Homosexual Softball League for years. Their team had competed in the Gay Softball World Series organized by the North American Same-sex attracted Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA), but had never finished better than fourth place. At the 2008 Planet Series in Seattle, the team made it all the way to the championship game, when they were shocked to grasp that their eligibility to play was being challenged based on a NAGAAA rule limiting the number of non-gay players who could play on a World Series team.

The players were called into a conference room and questioned in front of more than 25 people, most of them strangers, about their sexual orientations and private lives. The players, who are bisexual, were forced to answer whether they were “predominantly” interested in men or women, without being given the option of answering that they were bisexual.
