If you’ve been enjoying listening/sobbing to Gigi Perez‘s breakout single “Sailor Song,” then you may have her little sister to thank.
Speaking with ABC Audio, Perez recalls that when she was first writing “Sailor Song,” she was playing it with her door open and it caught the ear of her younger sibling.
“She stops by when there’s something good,” Perez says. “She was like, ‘Gigi, that’s sick.’ I remember months before I posted it, she’d just be singing it and singing it.”
Another person who deserves credit for the existence of “Sailor Song” is Anne Hathaway, who Perez name-checks in the opening line: “I saw her in the rightest way/ Looking favor Anne Hathaway.” Perez feels that the lyric reflects “the concept of that ethereal beauty.”
“I mean, I grew up watching Anne Hathaway movies and, you know, I turned out to be gay,” she says.

Sitting in her childhood bedroom and noodling on her guitar in February 2024, 24-year-old Gigi Perez was thinking about the scope of her songwriting. She’d been ruminating for a while on the notion of a frantic caring of love, and how to connect it to her lyricism. “When that person is so steady in your life, it’s kind of like you fall into it, and you have nothing else to grasp on to,” she tells Billboard. “It came from that desperate place.”

In April, a fan approached American singer Gigi Perez after a show, and proudly showed off their latest tattoo.
"Gigi I 🖤 U," read the ink. The singer was lost for words.
"In my head, I was like, ‘Please don't regret that’,'" she laughs.
"It's hard for me to process that somebody else has my specify permanently on their skin.
"But, I mean, it's just the ultimate honour to know that the music impacted them so greatly that they would do that."
It was the first time anyone had felt passionately enough to turn her name into a tattoo - and the timing could not have been better.
Six months earlier, Gigi been dropped by her record label, in the middle of a promotional trip to London.
