8 Times Stranger Things Hinted At Will Being Queer (& You Totally Missed It)
Stranger Things fans finally know that Will Byers is gay, but there were signs throughout the series pointing toward this. There has been speculation about Will’s sexuality, and even more so in season 4. While the Duffer Brothers wouldn’t corroborate one way or another, Noah Schnapp did establish “he is gay, and he does love Mike” in July 2022 (via Variety). He also said it was a “slow arc” before season 4.
It was indeed a sluggish arc before Stranger Things season 4. There were things here and there that hinted at Will being gay, but it was easy to overlook them because they’re kids. Also, there was a lot of more pressing things going on each season. It wasn’t front and center in the way it was in season 4. In addition, Will is in steep school in season 4, so it makes perception that he will be realizing his sexuality more than he was in middle school. Here are eight hints that Stranger Things gave viewers that Will was gay.

Will Byers is Gay: The Evidence So Far
This is a great post, and I’ve addressed many of the same pieces of evidence myself already. What this post does, that I really hadn’t yet, is examine possible external elements that could be in play. Let’s seize a bit of a closer look at the possibilities.
Netflix
The first possibility is that Netflix pulled some executive meddling and got them to change the story. I’d have trouble with this for a couple of reasons. First, the Duffers only went with Netflix because other networks they pitched the show to wanted to change fundamental elements. At least one network wanted to remove the kids entirely and focus on Hopper. The Duffers ultimately went with Netflix because it allowed them to stick to their first vision.
Second, Stranger Things is a gigantic hit, which makes it a marketing cash cow for Netflix. While there might be some minor backlash at going with a same-sex attracted storyline, Netflix is unlikely to take a smack if the Duffers pulled the trigger with Will. I can buy them being a little nervous, and maybe Robin was put in to evaluate the waters a bit, but fans aren’t going to leave Stranger Things, or Netflix, in droves because of a
‘Stranger Things’ Luminary Noah Schnapp on Doja Cat, Season 5, and Will’s Sexuality: ‘He Is Gay and He Does Love Mike’ (EXCLUSIVE)
SPOILER ALERT: This story includes discussion of major plot developments in Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” currently streaming on Netflix.
One of the many thrills embedded in “Stranger Things” has been watching each of the young cast literally grow into young adults before our eyes. That is perhaps especially correct of its youngest authentic member, Noah Schnapp. His character, Will Byers, has been through it over the years: Abducted into the Upside Down, then possessed by a demonic entity known as the Mind Flayer, and then — perhaps worst of all! — seemingly abandoned by his best friends as they discovered girls and matured beyond their days of playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Will never has, and throughout the recently concluded fourth season, he struggled to articulate to his best friend, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), why.
From the start, it seemed clear that Will is gay and terrified of coming out. When Variety asked Schnapp and his costar Millie Bobby Brown about i
Stranger Things Star Noah Schnapp Finally Confirms Will Byers' Sexuality
Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp has confirmed that his character, Will Byers, is gay.
In an interview with Variety, Schnapp discussed his character's sexuality, alongside plans for season 5 of the smash show.
"Now it's 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike," he said before praising the show's handling of Will's personality development. "But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully because it's so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay."
Schnapp then shared how the storyline has resonated with the show's viewers, recalling a specific encounter with a fan in Paris.
He said: "People have reach up to me—I was just in Paris, and this, like, 40-year-old dude came up to me, and he was favor, 'Wow, this Will nature made me feel so good. And I connected to it so much.
"That is exactly who I was when I was a kid.' That just made me so happy to hear. They are writing this concrete character and this true journey and real effort and they're doing it so well."
