‘The Blacklist’ Flashback: James Spader Kills It as ‘Gay Red’ in ‘Madeline Pratt’

“The Blacklist” returns with the second half of season two on Feb. 1, 2015 (such a distant time away!). To tie us over, I reflection I’d revisit one of my favorite scenes from season one, which took place in the episode titled “Madeline Pratt.”

The story follows Liz helping Tom adjust to the impending adoption (oh, how times have changed), while Red reveals a woman from his past as a target. But my favorite part of the story involves Red convincing Liz to pull off a heist at the Syrian Embassy, a plotline that reminds me of the opening scene in “True Lies,” as well as “To Catch a Thief,” the 1955 Hitchcock caper starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

The beauty of James Spader is that he lets you understand there’s so much going on inside Red’s leader, without actually telling you what it is. As the series moves along, we learn little tidbits of his life as Spader peels back the onion bit by bit.

In the Syrian Embassy plotline, Liz gets to be the burglar. As she and Red dance at the elegant ball, he tells h

Two Fun Facts About James Spader

According to IMDB, Spader has very poor eyesight, and cannot wear contact lenses. He has said that, when he plays characters who do not wear eyeglasses, he can barely make out the face of the star across from him in a scene. I wondered if that’s why we see him wearing sunglasses so often when they’re filming outside. Maybe they’re prescription sunglasses. Also, (and I say this as someone who has similar eyesight problems) I reflect it allows him to relax more when he’s on camera, because he’s focusing really hard on the actors’ faces in front of him, rather than camera and crew in the background. If something’s not directly in front of you, it just looks like a colored blur in the distance.

Also, he has a photographic memory. He can look at a script and remember what the pages look like. As he films a scene, he ‘reads’ the page in his mind. This is partially why, I think, he is such a great actor. For us normal folks, it probably takes a lot of brain power to remember lines from a script. But, since he’s reading it in his head, he can apply that brain power to focus on posture, facial expressions, etc.

Is Blacklist Queer?

I contain a love-hate relationship with Blacklist, the NBC tv series that basically exists because James Spader is a charismatic man who looks good in a variety of neat hats. It isn’t a fine series. Not really. I don’t think you’ll misplace anything by being spoilered on plot points from late in the series, but I also don’t think you should be sinking hours and hours of your life into watching this show to keep up with what I’m talking about.

Still, it briefly opened the window for a queer angle that would have been amazing and exciting and then it didn’t perform it, which feels appreciate an enormous own aim. But I need you to understand what I’m talking about, so let’s put that in your hand, and you can meet me after the cut, if you need to.

Spoiler warning for the general plot and some specific details about Raymond Reddington’s identity in The Blacklist, and also some cissexism and transphobia from a show I don’t think that much of.

Alright, so the bullet points as best I can get ’em.

  • Reddington is introduced as having a reason to want to operate with Elizabeth Keen
  • Elizabeth Keen then investig

All About James Spader's Very Private Relationship With Leslie Stefanson

    • The Blacklist star James Spader married his wife Victoria in 1987.
    • The couple later divorced, but share two sons, Sebastian and Elijah.
    • He has since dated Leslie Stefanson for over a decade. Together they are parents to son Nathaneal.

Actor James Spader’s diverse career in movies and television has made him a pop culture reference across multiple decades.

From the 80s, when James owned his breakout role of the arrogant rich jerk in the 1986 hit Pretty in Pink to the demanding-in-more-ways-than-one boss in 2002’s Secretary, he cemented his ability to play unsympathetic or uncomfortably offbeat characters. Currently, James plays the maddeningly mysterious Red Reddington on NBC’s The Blacklist.

Many people can probably name at least one of James's most memorable roles, but they might draw a complete blank when it comes to his personal life. Did you comprehend that James, 59, was divorced, has three children, and has been with his current love for over a decade?

He met his wife Victoria Kheel when he was living in New York. The two dated for more than a decade and during that moment, Victoria,
