Glee’s Matthew Morrison: I’m Not Gay

Matthew Morrison, the actor who plays Will Schuester on the Fox hit musical series Glee, revealed that people often think he is gay.

In an interview with Elle, the 31-year-old actor responded to a question about his sexuality with, "I'm not gay."

"I grew up singing and dancing, so people have been calling me gay since fifth grade," the actor said. "I've heard everything you could possibly hear about it."

Morrison added, "But I execute love gay people, so I'm not going to act like I was insulted or angry about it."

Morrison's sexuality has been the subject of much speculation on the Internet following an interview with the Advocate

Morrison revealed his first kiss was with two girls at the same time and that he had a love interest on Tiffani-Amber Thiessen from Saved by the Bell. "I loved her."

Morrison recently received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Top Actor in a Comedy or Musical TV Series. Glee lead with four nominations.

New episodes of Glee begin April 13 on Fox.

On June 1, Glee star Matthew Morrison was honored by the Gay, Lesbian & Unbent Education Network (GLSEN) at a ceremony in New York City for his function as Wil Schuester on the FOX musical series Glee. The GLSEN Respect Awards recognize the work of students, educators, individuals, and corporations who serve as role models and contain made a significant impact on the lives of LGBT youth.

"Glee became a cause of hope, inspiration, and release for so many affected audiences dealing with these very issues, [and] allowed some kids to walk a little taller and prouder and be more confident in themselves," Morrison said in his acceptance speech. "As an actor, I've never been more proud."

He dedicated the award "to the kids out there everywhere who have stood up to bullying and who are not just afraid to be themselves, but haughty to be themselves."

Citing a 2009 ELLE interview, HuffPost Live pinned down the "Glee" star about how it feels to have both fans and the media question his sexuality:

"I know my possess truth, I'm a very happy heterosexual man," Morrison said. "But like I said in that quote, I have a lot of gay friends and I'm a big supporter of gay rights and gay marriage. This is America, this is the land of freedom and opportunity and I believe it's kind of mad that a loving or committed gay or female homosexual couple can't marry just because they're different."

He then concluded, "I support my gay friends and they support me."

For the past four years Matthew Morrison has starred as choir director Will Schuester on Fox's clap show Glee. While the show has made him a household name, Morrison fondly likes to tell, "At the end of the day, I'm a song and dance man."

To prove it, he's recorded his sophomore album, Where It All Began, which features standards and classic Broadway tunes, including "Send in the Clowns," "Ease on Down the Road" with Smokey Robinson and "On the Highway Where You Live," the song Morrison said he has sung at every audition, including Glee. The project marks the first from 222 Records, a newly formed label by Adam Levine and the last from producer Phil Ramone, who died in March.

The title of the album is apropos. The 34-year-old California native's big break came when he made his Broadway debut in Footloose and went on to actor in Hairspray and The Light in the Piazza as Fabrizio Naccarelli. That role earned him a Tony nomination for foremost featured actor in a musical.
