Netflix’s Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender May Feature Multiple LGBTQ+ Characters
If you ponder you grew out of animated television before the early s, or your Netflix watching consists entirely and predictably of The Office, it’s time to climb out from under your comedy rock (also, reassess your views on animation) and watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, literally one of the top animated series of all time. For those of us on our umpteenth viewing, we’re looking ahead to Netflix’s live-action adaptation, which will likely smash the streaming service in late or (gasps)
The adaptation will be a “retelling” of the unique series, helmed by series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The duo have spoken about casting for the series (which is reportedly still taking place), and how they wanted to maintain the ethnic diversity of the original series—one of many mistakes of that other adaptation of which we will not speak.
According to sources close to We Got This Covered, the Netflix adaptation will also feature “several” LGBTQ characters.

Earthbenders Get a Queer Start Story in the AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Live-Action Series
Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s successor story, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, featured a few queer characters and romances, including, of course, between its main characters, Korra and Asami. But the earlier tale of The Last Airbender offered no representation in this arena. And so, going into Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s live-action series, the franchise’s many gender non-conforming fans hoped they might see a little bit more queerness depicted in this take on the story. And happily, although brief, Netflix’s Avatar adaptation does bring some queerness to the table. In fact, it makes the origin story of an entire group of benders overtly queer. While this flash of queerness isn’t necessarily enough for the long term, it is done in a lovely way that threads queerness into the very bedrock of Avatar‘s world. And so, we’ll celebrate it!
Let’s take a glance at how Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s live-action adaptation made the origin story of earthbending into a queer myth.
“Secret tunnel! Secret tunnel!” We recognize this Avatar: Nobody fucking MOVE! Something fresh and gay has slap the Avatar universe. No I’m not (and never) talking about James Cameron’s CGI blue people, but the series Avatar: The Last Airbender. A Nickelodeon original show, the 61 episode series follows a world in turmoil and nations divided. A live-action series just released and changed one of the show’s minor origin stories to include a queer couple at its center. The Cave of Two Lovers One huge moment that made me really happy in the new show was the re-telling of how the city of Omashu was founded. It combines a lot of plotlines from the original series, but adds an exciting modern element. In the OG show, The Cave of Two Lovers follows Oma and Shu who fell in love but were from fighting villages. They met secretly in caves, using their earthbending to carve elaborate tunnels to reach each other. But once Oma didn’t arrive because she'd died in the war, so Shu was heartbroken. Shu used his power to stop the war and united both villages, leading to Omashu. It’s very Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare meets Sci-fi. They were said to be the very first earth benders, a major aspect o Could LGBTQ characters appear in the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series? Back in the mids, Avatar: The Last Airbender took kids’ programming by storm. The cartoon heavily influenced by Asian culture followed a young boy and his friends as they tried to save the world from a global war. The show continued to be famous adv past its airtime and even garnered a feature adaption. Unfortunately, that production was grossly unfaithful to the source material. But, luckily, that injustice led to Netflix buying the rights to attempt another live-action adaption. Now, We Got This Covered has reported insider info about the Netflix project. While Netflix has been keeping facts about the live-action adaption under wraps, it looks like some Hollywood insiders aren’t as tight-lipped. We Got This Covered, the same publication which broke the news that the MCU’s The Eternals would include a gay superhero and shared that Birds of Prey’s villain was LGBTQ, has received pos from “their sources” that Netflix will feature several original LGBTQ characters in the world of the avatar. Keep in mind, this is just a rumor for now. While We Got This Covered has a .
