James Franco opens up about his ‘gay obsession’

James Franco is a man of many talents, and one who's always kept his sexuality ambigious – until now.

The actor, director, poet, teacher and writer (I've probably left off a couple here, but you get the gist) just addressed the persistent rumours which swirl around his sexuality. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Franco explained why he likes to let people wonder whether he's gay, unbent or somewhere in between.

"One of the nice things about all that speculation, Franco said, "is that it's a smokescreen". By allowing the rumours to persist around his sexuality, they act as a "shield", meaning that he's freer to live his personal life the way he wants it.

Franco's long been interested by how our society views sexuality and homosexuality in particular, something he explained in the Rolling Stone interview. "When I was studying at NYU, I took classes in critical studies, and one of my favourites was on queer cinema. We’re told the straight, heteronormative stories ad nauseam by now, in our movies, our shows, our commercials – everywhere. I believe it’s healthy to produce work that disrupts and questions that, and shows

James Franco Opens Up About His Sexuality: 'I'm a Little Gay'

James Franco is addressing everything from his sexuality to hosting the Oscars.

In an interview with New York Magazine, the 37-year-old actor refers to himself as "a minute gay," and says both "the straight press and the gay press" are "over focusing" on his lifestyle.

"So, the first doubt is why do they care? Well, because I’m a celebrity, so I guess they care who I’m having sex with. But if your definition of gay and unbent is who I hibernate with, then I predict you could say I’m a gay c**k tease," he admits. "It's where my allegiance lies, where my sensibilities lie, how I define myself."

He added, "There's a gay James."

Franco received quite a bit of criticism when he hosted the 2011 Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway, but says the bad reviews didn't bother him. "In the best-case scenario, even if I killed it, it's not going to support my career because that's not what my career's based on. It was an experiment," he says of hosting. "If you go and host th

James Franco Addresses His Sexuality in Bizarre New Interview: ''I'm Gay in My Art''

"If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I'm direct. In the Twenties and Thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with. Sailors would f--k guys all the period, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren't considered gay."

Gay James added, "I like my queer general persona. I like that it's so hard to define me and that people always have to guess about me. They don't know what the hell is up with me, and that's superb . Not that I undertake what I do to confuse people, but as long as they are confused, I get time to play."

And while Franco is fine with the common discussion of his adore life, he has zero interest in adding his two cents to the mix.

"I really don't take care of what people think about my sexuality, and it's also none of their business. So I really don't choose to name with my public persona. I am not interested in most straight male-bonding rituals, but I am also kept from being fully embraced by the same-sex attracted community because I don't th

James Franco says he's gay 'up to the point of intercourse'

Actor James Franco, whose gay roles have led to questions about his own sexuality, says he's "gay in his art and straight in [his] life."

The 36-year-old Franco has played gay in numerous films, including 2008's Milk and this year's I Am Michael, and produced several films which movie gay characters.

In a film posted online Tuesday, Franco writes about the questions surrounding his sexuality.

"[A]re you fucking gay or what?" straight James Franco asks gay James Franco in the piece titled The straight James Franco talks to the gay James Franco.

"Well, I like to think that I'm queer in my art and straight in my life," gay James Franco answers."Although, I'm also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I'm straight. So I guess it depends on how you explain gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I'm straight. In the twenties and thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with.Sailors would fuck guys all the second, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren't considered gay."
